Laliş: A Haven for the Yazidis

Nestled amidst the Nineveh Plains of northern Iraq, Laliş, also known as Lalişa Nûranî, is a mountain valley that holds immense significance for the Yazidi community. This sacred site, comprising a temple and a mountain valley, has been a central hub of Yazidi spirituality for centuries.

The most revered site within Laliş is the tomb of Sheikh ʿAdī ibn Musāfir, the founder and most prominent saint of the Yazidi faith. His tomb is housed within a rectangular building measuring 30 x 12 meters, which serves as the focal point of the temple complex.

The Yazidis, an ethno-religious minority group with ancient roots, regard Laliş as their holiest site. It is here that they make their annual pilgrimage during the month of August, known as the "Kawashahr" or "White Wednesday." During this pilgrimage, Yazidis from around the world gather in Laliş to venerate their sacred shrines, pray, and participate in traditional rituals.
