Breaking Down The Blow

Mets Lose as Diaz Gives Up Grand Slam to Arizona in Eighth

Breaking Down the Blow

The New York Mets' playoff hopes took a significant hit on Wednesday night as they fell to the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-2.

Edwin Diaz, the Mets' closer, gave up a grand slam to Daulton Varsho in the eighth inning, proving to be the game-losing hit.

The loss dropped the Mets to 81-63 on the season, 2.5 games behind the Atlanta Braves in the NL East.

Varsho's Slam Sinks Mets

After the Mets had tied the game at 2-2 in the seventh inning, Diaz entered the game in the eighth to try and close it out.

However, he quickly got into trouble, loading the bases with one out.

Varsho then came to the plate and launched a 96 mph fastball over the wall in left field for a grand slam, giving the Diamondbacks a 6-2 lead.

Post-Game Reaction

Mets manager Buck Showalter expressed frustration after the game, saying, "We had a chance to win this game, but we didn't get it done."

Diaz, who has been one of the best closers in baseball this season, took responsibility for the loss.

"I have to be better," Diaz said. "I can't let that happen again."

Up Next

The Mets will remain in Arizona to face the Diamondbacks again on Thursday night.

They will then return to New York for a three-game series against the Miami Marlins.

With just 18 games remaining in the regular season, the Mets need to start winning if they want to make the playoffs.
